Wat Khao Tam is a small temple located on top of a hill near Ban Tai Village. An American monk lived in it for over a decade and his ashes were scattered over a cliff overlooking a field of palm trees at the foot of the temple. This is not a real "Wat" as only a couple of monks and a nun live there. But the place is quite famous for its Buddhist Meditation Centre, run by foreigners for decades, where "retreaters" have to remain in total silence for a period of 10 days, as per the Theravadin tradition.

For more information check the vipassana retreat chapter of our page on spirituality on Koh Phangan.

Wat Pho, is a very popular temple among the Buddhists of Ban Tai, as well as among foreigners, as it hosts an Herbal Sauna. Come and enjoy the many great benefits of a traditional herbal steam sauna where natural herbs are heated on a log fire to create the steam that filters into the room. On top of the cleansing and relaxing effects of a session, you'll even get to keep the smell of the herbs for a few hours...

Chedi Wat Nai is a beautiful little Pagoda located on the side of a small paved road, just off the main road leading to Thong Nai Pan from Ban Tai Pier. You’ll spot it just before you arrive at the coconut factory. It’s right in the middle of the coconut plantation, whose owners happen to be very warm and friendly farmers.
The Big Banyan tree just behind makes a nice picture too.

Wat Thong Sala is the most popular temple in Koh Phangan for the local Buddhists, and is also the place where every important ceremony takes place. On Buddhist celebration days the temple houses big festivals with many stalls selling almost anything you can think of, such as food (soups, barbecues, pancakes, ice creams...), clothes, tools, Thai handicrafts, decorations, animals... definitely a good place for shopping, with amazing prices.

Chinese Temple is located on a hill on the road to Thong Sala, 1km from Chaloklum. This temple owes its edification to a woman who came some 15 years ago to attend a ceremony in Sangthom Wat. She claimed to have dreamt about the Chinese Buddha, who told her that he wished for a new temple to be built there for him. After raising the funds the building started to be completed in 1992.
Nowadays, new extension buildings are still under construction, and its decoration gets richer and richer months after months. Tourists and locals go there to get a blessing from the resident nun and to try to discover their fate throwing the "Prediction sticks".

Phaeng Waterfall is located in Ban Madua Wan on the road to Chaloklum, 3 km after Thong Sala. The main waterfall is a steep 250m walk up a jungle trail and it's possible to have a swim in the fresh water there. A further 200m up the path will bring you to a fantastic viewpoint. a little jungle trek that leads up the mountain Kao Ra viewpoint is also possible with signs all along the trail, but you'll have to take care as it can be difficult and even dangerous in some places.

Than Sadet Waterfalls.
King Churalongkorn, the Great and revered Rama V, came here on several occasions to bathe in the natural pool at the base of the waterfall. King Prajadhipok, the Great Rama VII, and the current King Bumipol Aduldej, the Great Rama IX, are also known to have visited it. Recently declared a National Park due to its great historical importance and abundant wildlife, the place is just fantastic and well worth the trip. The only small problem here is to get to it: one must be extra cautious when driving as the road is in rather bad condition and presents many difficult parts.

Angthong national marine park, famous around the world since "The Beach", this place has some of the most spectacular landscapes of all Thailand. As it is protected, you can reach this group of islands only with day-tour excursions. Many agencies offer to bring you there by speedboat, with some excursions on Angthong, the main island, and, even, some sea kayaking in the archipelago. The place and its surroundings are simply magical.

Koh Ma is a very popular snorkelling and diving site due to its stunning coral reef, its amazingly beautiful underwater fauna and flora and the many colourful fishes swimming around these parts. Koh Ma, a small peninsula in the north of Koh Phangan, is connected to Haad Mae Had by a sandy path, which makes it possible at low tide to walk across and take a look around. It has also been declared a Marine National Park and fishing with a gun is prohibited.

Angthong Marine Park is one of the jewellery of the gulf of Siam.  Searching for "The Beach" of Alex Garland ? It is supposed to be one of these islands.

Boat trip around the island are really pleasant. As Koh Phangan is still preserved and wild, many beaches are only reachable by boat and the stunning view of the coast will make wonderful pictures ! A genuine paradise, preserved like eden, with small deserted coves and jungle straight by the sea. Boat tours are offered in many different places to go around the island. We advise you to leave from Haad Rin to make the whole tour of the island. Try the different tours as well as speedboat services located in Bantai, or ask around to taxi-boats...

Elephant trekking is now available on Koh Phangan. Close to Chaloklum, they await to take you for a 30mn to 90mn ride trough the jungle, or just to eat the bananas you'll offer them or share a souvenir picture with you. The people, here, are really nice and can also organise full-day tour around the island with a stop at Than Sadet waterfalls, small 4x4 rally on the dirt tracks of the island, some swimming and snorkelling and even a mid-day Sweet-break, where you'll be able to enjoy some deliciously refreshing home made ice creams. Just contac them on the main street, near the 7-Eleven at Chaloklum.
There are also Elephant trekkings organized from Ban Kai since April 2008, with Phangan Safari as well, follow the sign from the main road, few meters after the Nong View Restaurant

For jungle trekking experience, the nature lovers will be able to link Haad Rin to Haad Thian (4 km), on the south-east coast of Koh Phangan, crossing the rainforest. The "green dot trail", so called because of the green dot painted on the trees to lead the way, will take you through an Indiana Jones style adventure, walking on small trails, crossing rivers on trees, and, of course, enjoying the magnificent flora and some stunning panoramas. Just reach the Laluna Bungalow, in Haad Rin, it's the start of the trail.

If you fancy a spot of Mountain Biking, Koh Phangan has good facilities available. The island is quite big and its South Western part counts a variety of interesting sights. If you are an expert, you can test your skills on the mountainous road between Ban Kai and Haad Rin (only for the fittest!!!). There are also many dirt tracks to discover, which often lead to some scenic views amidst the jungle. Mountain bikes can be hired in Thong Sala, Haad Rin and many bungalows on the island.

Since few years, Sea Kayaking has spread on Koh Phangan. It's obviously a very nice way to sail around, as the sea is usually quiet and not that deep. It's also affordable to all, as you rent it on an hour basis, you'll just have to go where you like as no special tour is organised.. If you fancy a try, you'll find some for rent in many places on the beaches.

Catamaran. Escape from this world for a while with a crew of up to 8 people, aboard "Nok Talay", a superb catamaran, which will take you around the islands in the area. The organisers will pick you up on Koh Phangan and take you to deserted beaches and idyllic anchorage points. The boat can leave with 60 litres of fuel, 120 litres of water and all basic provisions necessary for the duration of the trip. The catamaran is available bare or with a crew.

Let sail this Catamaran in the archipelago of Koh Samui.  Kite surfing in Koh Phangan, fly away, but take care of the beach...  Wave boarding is possible in Koh Phangan

Wind sports. There is now a Kite-surf and a Wind-surf school in Koh Phangan, both located on Ban Tai beach, which has a natural reef protecting the inner bay. As a consequence, the water tends to remain flat and wave-free, but the wind is good and allows great surfing.
You'll find courses for all levels, from beginners to experts, and the teaching will suit your needs and aspirations. There's a wide un-crowded bay with water up to the waist maximum.

Water sports. Escape from this world for a while, alone with the sea, is now possible in Koh Phangan. Since a few time now, you can experiment mecanic sports and practice wake boarding, boat and even rent jet-skis for two or alone, to make your own tour of the island. Check around the different tours that organize that kind of motor sports, like Phangan Adventure or the cool Wake Up ! in Chaloklum.

Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, attracts numerous travellers to Thailand, many of them searching to practice and get better. Since a long time already, Koh Samui is well known for its training camp, but nowadays, Koh Phangan is in the raw, too. There are, indeed, many fighting places in Thong Sala and Haad Rin, wich organize evening fight show (exhibition or real), these shows being more and more popular within the travellers community, and foreigners are even invited to raw sometimes. But, before challenging the local champion, you better get some serious teaching ! You'll then have to choose the right school, and among all the ones that are offering that kind of service, the most reliable seem to be Jungle Gym in Haad Rin, and Horizon Training Camp, on the isolated beach of Haad Tien, as both have former international champion as teaching Master.

Paintball is now available on Koh Phangan. On the road leading to the hospital, just at the junction to the west coast, you will find Paintball Warfare. So if you want to challenge your friends in a safe setting, go for it, they charge around 300 bahts for a whole day session... and they also have a bar for those of you who do not fancy war but better love...

Thai boxing, Better Kick than get kicked !  Challenge your friends, it is war out there ! Paintball in Koh Phangan.
