A World-Class Event in the Gem and Jewelry Industry
The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) have proudly announced the 68th edition of the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair. This highly anticipated event, which is Thailand’s largest and Asia’s longest-celebrated gem and jewelry trade show, will mark its ruby jubilee this year. Scheduled between September 6th and 10th, 2023, the fair will be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok.
The Significance of the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair
The Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair is not only Thailand’s premier gem and jewelry trade fair but also one of the world’s five most prominent events of its kind. Mr. Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, Director-General of DITP, underscored the fair’s importance as a vital trading platform, enabling Thai entrepreneurs to interact and negotiate with buyers from around the globe. This interaction fosters partnerships, broadens business opportunities, and promotes collaboration while significantly contributing to the country’s economy.
The gem and jewelry industry employs nearly 800,000 people, spanning from production to retail and exports. Approximately 12,000 entrepreneurs, with 90% being SMEs, are involved in the industry throughout Thailand. The event substantially supports jewelry exports and strengthens Thailand’s position as a critical hub for the global gem and jewelry trade.
Thailand: A Major Center for Colored Gemstones
Mr. Sumed Prasongphongchai, Director of GIT, emphasized that the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair is an essential destination for traders worldwide, particularly in the colored gemstone sector. Thailand is a significant trading center for such stones, with skilled craftsmen possessing a unique ability to cut and enhance the quality of gemstones – a craft recognized worldwide. Chanthaburi province, in particular, is known as the center of artisans excelling in these skills.
Celebrating 40 Years of Brilliance
The 68th edition of the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair commemorates its 40th anniversary under the theme ’40 Years of Brillance.’ The fair will showcase the robust growth of Thailand’s renowned gem and jewelry industry on the global stage. With over 1,100 exhibitors and 2,400 booths spread across Halls 1-8 of the G and LG levels of QSNCC, the event is expected to attract more than 30,000 visitors from across the world and generate over 3 billion Baht in revenue.
Exciting Features and Exhibitions
In addition to the stunning showcase, the event will feature a Networking Reception, the 40th Anniversary Highlights exhibition titled ‘The Magnificent 40-Year Journey of Brilliance,’ which recounts the glory of the Thai gem and jewelry industry through iconic jewelry pieces. Attendees can also explore The Jewellers exhibition, The New Faces exhibition zone, and various seminars on trends and happenings in the gems and jewelry industry.
Growth and Export Potential
In 2022, gems and jewelry products (excluding gold) were Thailand’s 3rd largest export product, generating up to $8,036 million. During the first half of 2023 (January to June), exports reached a value of $4,348 million, indicating an impressive growth of 11.94%. The industry is expected to continue expanding by 10% this year, driven by increasing demand for goods as major trade partners’ economies recover and economic activities pick up. Furthermore, improved tourism, open borders, and lifted travel restrictions contribute to the positive outlook.
