Koh Samui Municipal Council Meeting: Key Decisions and Updates

Introduction

The Koh Samui Municipal Council held its Ordinary Session 2, Meeting 1 of the year 2023 A.D. on June 29th at the Petch Samui Meeting Room, Koh Samui Municipality Office. The attendees included the Municipal Council President, Mr. Thanakorn Ruengphanit, the Deputy Mayor of Koh Samui, Mr. Sutham Samthong, and other municipal officials and members. The meeting saw the discussion and resolution of three important motions.

Motion 1: Upgrading Wat Kham to a Temple

The first motion discussed the upgrade of Wat Kham (ruins) to a temple with residing monks for the rains retreat in Moo 2, Maeret Subdistrict. This motion was proposed in accordance with Article 54 of the Forest Act B.E. 2484 (1941 A.D.). The council members unanimously approved the motion with 22 votes in favor and none against.

Motion 2: Utilization of Forest Areas in Koh Samui District

The second motion pertained to the approval for permission to utilize forest areas in Koh Samui District as per Article 54 of the Forest Act B.E. 2484 (1941 A.D.). The motion was split into three zones:

  • Zone 1: This zone covered Moo 1, 2, 3 of Ang Thong Subdistrict and Lipa Noi Subdistrict and Moo 1 of Taling Ngam Subdistrict. The council members disapproved the utilization with five votes against and 17 abstentions, including the Council President. However, the council members approved the utilization for Moo 1 of Taling Ngam Subdistrict with 22 votes in favor and none against.

  • Zone 2: This zone encompassed Moo 2, 3, 4, 5 of Taling Ngam Subdistrict and Na Mueang Subdistrict. The Deputy Mayor proposed to withdraw the motion. The council members approved the withdrawal with 18 votes in favor, none against, and four abstentions, including the Council President.

  • Zone 3: This zone included Moo 6 of Maeret Subdistrict. The council members approved the utilization with 20 votes in favor, none against, and two abstentions, including the Council President.

Motion 3: Appointing Basic Education School Board Committee Members

The third motion sought approval for selecting representatives from local administrative organizations to be appointed as Basic Education School Board Committee members. The selected candidates for each municipal school were:

  • Municipal School 1 (Wat Lamai): Mr. Anucha Chotichuang
  • Municipal School 2 (Wat Saket): Mr. Arun Mueang-In
  • Municipal School 3 (Wat Samutaram): Mr. Prachak Poolsawat
  • Municipal School 4 (Wat Kiri Mat): Mr. Arun Mueang-In
