Surging Flights and Tourist Arrivals
Koh Samui, the beautiful resort island in the southern province of Surat Thani, is witnessing a significant revival in its tourism industry. In July, both the number of flights and tourist arrivals surged, indicating that the island’s tourism has returned to its pre-coronavirus levels in 2019.
An air traffic report from the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (Aerothai) Company revealed that Koh Samui Airport ranked third in flight volume among regional airports in July. During this month, Phuket Airport recorded 7,264 flights, followed by Chiang Mai Airport with 4,487 flights. Koh Samui Airport registered 2,268 flights, averaging 74 flights per day, and carried a total of 141,454 passengers to and from the island.
Known for its stunning white beaches, luxurious resorts, and world-famous Full Moon parties, Koh Samui has always been a popular tourist destination.
Surat Thani’s Tourism Resurgence
The resurgence in Surat Thani’s tourism industry can be partly attributed to the performances of both the Surat Thani and Koh Samui airports. In July, Surat Thani Airport catered to 754 flights, accommodating 114,404 passengers. The combined tally of both airports amounted to 3,022 flights, serving a total of 255,858 passengers.
This strong performance has led Surat Thani Governor Wichawut Jinto to declare that the region’s tourism is back to pre-Covid-19 levels.
Increasing Flight Demand
Despite the revival, Governor Wichawut believes that there are not enough flights to meet the demand for tourists visiting Koh Samui. He suggests increasing the number of flights to 100 per day. In August, the island welcomed 171,834 tourists, further highlighting the need for more flights.
Surat Thani’s Tourism Potential
Surat Thani boasts a high potential for tourism, thanks to its two airports, abundance of land and sea attractions, affordable accommodations, rich seafood offerings, and the warm hospitality of its local residents.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has also reported that domestic tourism in the country has recovered to 93% compared to 2019, which marked the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
