The Thai government has set an ambitious goal to transform Krabi, an Andaman province, into a carbonneutral tourism destination by 2040. This initiative is part of a broader plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and netzero emissions at the national level by 2065.

To drive the carbon-neutral tourism initiative, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with 22 state agencies and private sector companies. The aim of this collaboration is to promote Krabi as Thailand's first province to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This project highlights the Thai government's commitment to making sustainable development a priority in the country.
Blue Carbon Storage and Restoration Projects
The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation will collaborate with related agencies to assess blue carbon storage capacity in mangrove forests and natural seagrass. They will also implement restoration projects in the southern region of the Andaman Sea and organize activities to raise awareness of coastal ecology restoration in local communities.
Geospatial Platform for Monitoring Carbon Changes
In an effort to create a conservation network for sustainability, the ministry has developed a geospatial platform to monitor carbon changes through remote sensing. This innovative system will help track the progress of Krabi's transformation into a carbon-neutral tourism destination and ensure that the region remains committed to sustainable practices.
