Accident Overview
A devastating accident occurred in Kanchanaburi’s Muang district early Wednesday morning, resulting in the tragic death of a woman and injuries to five other Myanmar nationals, including a 6-year-old boy. The incident took place on Highway 323 in front of the provincial transport office in tambon Kaeng Sian.
The Crash Scene
Upon being alerted at about 5:20 am, Pol Capt Thammawat Sukhueewat, the deputy investigation chief at the Muang district police station, arrived at the scene along with medical staff and rescue workers. They found a severely damaged pickup truck with Surat Thani licence plates, crashed on the footpath. One dead woman and five injured people were trapped inside.
The deceased woman was discovered holding the unconscious 6-year-old boy in her arms. In a race against time, rescue workers used hydraulic jacks to force open one of the pickup’s doors and retrieved the victims from the wreckage. The injured individuals were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.
Accident Victims and Background
Investigations revealed that the passengers were Myanmar migrants who worked in Samut Sakhon. In a separate location, approximately 30 meters from the initial crash site, a 10-wheel truck loaded with wood and bearing Nakhon Pathom licence plates was found with significant damage to its rear.
The truck driver, Chad Bovornthanasarn, was waiting for the police to arrive. During preliminary questioning, Mr. Chad reported that he was transporting wood to Ratchaburi when he heard a loud crash at the rear of his vehicle. He speculated that the pickup truck driver might have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Surveillance Footage and Investigation
Surveillance footage from a nearby camera captured the moment when the pickup truck collided with the back of the 10-wheeler, without any apparent attempt to brake. The pickup driver was later identified as Ka Thet Mon, a Myanmar national. Once his condition improves, the police plan to question him further.
The ongoing investigation will provide more details and possibly shed light on the cause of this tragic accident that shook the Kanchanaburi community. It is a stark reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and the potential consequences of driver fatigue.
