Dereliction of Duty Charges
Fourteen policemen are set to face dereliction of duty charges in connection with the murder of a highway police officer that occurred at a dinner party in Nakhon Pathom province. Deputy national police chief Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn announced that the accused policemen failed to provide aid to the two officers who were shot during the party on September 6th.
The victims of the shooting were Pol Maj Siwakorn Saibua, a 32-year-old highway police inspector who later died from multiple gunshot wounds, and Pol Lt Col Wasin Panpee, both under Highway Police Sub-division 2.
Policemen Involved in the Case
The 14 policemen facing charges include police colonels who serve as station chiefs, deputy police inspectors, and seven non-commissioned officers. The incident took place at the home of Praween Chankhlai, also known as Kamnan Nok, in Muang district. Approximately 30 policemen attended the party at the residence in tambon Takong on the night of September 6th.
Dispute over Promotion
According to reports, the shooting transpired after Pol Maj Siwakorn rejected Praween’s request to promote his nephew, who is a highway policeman. In response, a gunman associated with Praween fired multiple shots at Pol Maj Siwakorn from close range. Several stray bullets also struck and injured Pol Lt Col Wasin.
Public Outrage and Aftermath
The incident sparked widespread public outrage as the policemen present at the party did not arrest the gunman or Praween, allowing them to flee. The gunman was later killed in an extra-judicial killing, while Praween, considered a suspect in the case, eventually turned himself in. Authorities from various organizations have since been investigating Praween’s business affairs.
Moreover, Pol Gen Surachate revealed that CCTV footage obtained from Praween’s home showed several false statements made by party attendees. A corrections official was dismissed for removing the servers from the house and disposing of them in water.
