Introduction
Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever and Chikungunya are two viral diseases spread by Aedes mosquitoes. These diseases pose serious health risks and can be fatal if not treated properly. In Thailand, a prevention and control campaign was launched in Koh Samui District, Surat Thani Province, to tackle the increasing number of cases and improve overall public health.
Campaign Launch
On July 1, 2019, the opening ceremony of the Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever and Chikungunya Disease Prevention and Control Campaign took place at Santivaram Temple in Koh Samui District. Mr. Anucha Saengsri, Director of the Thaling Ngam Subdistrict Health Promotion Hospital, presided over the ceremony.
Campaign Objectives
The primary goal of the campaign is to reduce the incidence of dengue fever by encouraging cooperation between the public and community organizations, fostering a collective effort to control and prevent the spread of the disease. The campaign includes several strategies and initiatives:
Reducing Mosquito Populations
One of the key components of the campaign is to decrease the prevalence of mosquito larvae, thereby reducing the number of adult Aedes mosquitoes responsible for transmitting the virus. This can be achieved through various measures, such as eliminating standing water, using larvicides, and promoting the use of insect repellents.
Raising Public Awareness
Educating the public about dengue fever and Chikungunya disease is crucial. By raising awareness of the risks associated with these diseases, people can take appropriate steps to protect themselves and their families. This includes using mosquito repellents, wearing protective clothing, and installing screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
Community Involvement
The Thaling Ngam Subdistrict Administration, comprising groups 1-5, actively supports the campaign. These groups are responsible for seeking financial and material support from the Koh Samui Municipal Health Insurance Fund, ensuring that adequate resources are available for the ongoing prevention and control efforts.
Monitoring and Evaluation
To track the progress of the campaign, regular monitoring and evaluation will be conducted. This will help identify any gaps in the campaign strategies or areas that require additional focus, ensuring that the campaign remains effective in achieving its goals.
Future Prospects
The Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever and Chikungunya Disease Prevention and Control Campaign aims to improve the quality of life for residents in the Koh Samui District and beyond. By engaging the community and ensuring that resources are available to support these efforts, the campaign is poised to make a significant impact in reducing the spread of these dangerous diseases.
