Phuket, a popular tourist destination in Thailand, is home to a growing number of cannabis dispensaries. As of now, there are 1,701 registered cannabisrelated businesses on the island, with 1,451 of them being dispensaries. These shops are spread across different districts: 502 in Kathu district, 222 in Thalang district, and the remainder in Muang Phuket district.
The recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by eight parties to form a coalition government threatens the future of businesses thriving under the current freer cannabis policy. The Move Forward Partyled bloc has agreed to reinstate cannabis as a narcotic drug under the jurisdiction of Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health and regulate its use, cultivation, import, and export according to specific laws.
