Overview of the Initiative
The Sanitation Division of the Public Health and Environment Department, Koh Samui City Municipality, initiated a comprehensive workshop training activity targeting waste separation for students in Bo Phut Subdistrict. This initiative forms a major part of the Community Promotion Project for Waste Separation and Wastewater Management at Source, aiming to foster environmentally responsible behaviors on Koh Samui Island.
Objectives of the Workshop
The primary goal of the workshop is to educate and empower young students with knowledge about proper waste separation methods. By focusing on school-age participants, the program seeks to build early awareness, encourage practical application both at school and home, and cultivate future leaders in environmental stewardship.
Schedule and Participation
The activity took place over a six-day period, from June 4 to 9, 2025, encompassing six training sessions. Each session hosted 50 students, ensuring personalized attention and interactive engagement. The participants were Grade 4 and 5 students drawn from six local schools:
- Wat Sawang Arom School
- Ban Bo Phut School
- Ban Bang Rak School
- Ban Had Ngam School
- Ban Plai Laem School
- Wat Buntarikaram School
Training Content and Activities
The curriculum provided a thorough introduction to the different types of waste—organic, recyclable, hazardous, and non-recyclable—and their appropriate disposal methods. Interactive modules included:
- Hands-on demonstrations of sorting various waste items
- Group discussions on environmental impacts of improper waste management
- Practical activities, such as setting up waste segregation bins in school grounds
- Creative projects like DIY recycling crafts and posters
These activities were designed to make learning engaging and to reinforce the message of personal responsibility in environmental care.
Broader Impact on the Community
By equipping students with foundational knowledge and motivation, the program aims to encourage a ripple effect of behavioral change throughout Bo Phut Subdistrict. Students are expected to act as waste separation ambassadors, influencing their peers and families. The initiative supports the municipality’s broader goals for sustainable waste management and improved public health in the island area.
Integration with Ongoing Municipal Projects
The workshop is part of an ongoing commitment by Koh Samui City Municipality to promote sustainable practices. It aligns with other community-led waste management initiatives, such as public awareness campaigns, installation of sorting bins in public areas, and collaborations with local environmental organizations to enhance recycling and wastewater management.
