Introduction
Drowning is a significant problem that affects young children, particularly those under five years old. Often caused by environmental factors and a lack of knowledge about proper life-saving techniques, this issue calls for community-wide efforts to address it. The “Little Kids Beware of Drowning” project was launched on September 1, 2013, to spread awareness and educate those involved in supervising and protecting children from drowning incidents.
The Opening Ceremony
The project’s opening ceremony took place at Thanyawutthiwet School in Bo Phut Subdistrict, Koh Samui District. Ms. Nalinrat Kaewkong, the school’s director, presided over the event. Participants included municipal council members, disaster prevention and mitigation officials of Koh Samui District, health insurance fund committees, teachers, students, and municipal staff from the Department of Public Health and Environment.
Addressing Environmental Factors
One of the main factors contributing to child drowning cases is the absence of proper safety measures. For example, there might be a lack of fencing around water sources, or unsuitable play areas provided for children. The project aims to tackle these environmental factors and create safer environments for children to play and explore.
Life-saving Techniques and First Aid Training
Another critical aspect of the project is the emphasis on proper life-saving and first aid techniques. Parents, caregivers, and children need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively in drowning situations. The Health Insurance Fund supports this project, offering training and education on drowning prevention for those involved in supervising and protecting children from drowning incidents.
Developing Skills for Teachers, Staff, and Students
The project’s goal is not only to raise awareness of the importance of addressing child drowning fatalities but also to develop essential skills for teachers, staff, and kindergarten students (grades 1-3). Participants are trained in self-help and assisting others in drowning situations following international rescue guidelines. By providing this training, the project aims to create a proactive community that can prevent and respond effectively to potential drowning incidents.
