Researchers from Chiang Mai University have discovered a new species of plant belonging to the Annonaceae family. In celebration of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s 91st birthday, they decided to name this new species “Majestatis”. This beautiful plant pays tribute to Queen Sirikit, a well-known protector of biodiversity.
The Origins of Miliusa Majestatis
Miliusa majestatis, which has the scientific name Miliusa majestatis Damth, Sinbumr & Chaowasku, can be found in the southern provinces of Thailand – Krabi, Phangnga, and Surat Thani. Assistant Professor Tanawat Chaowasku from the biology faculty of Chiang Mai University played a crucial role in revealing the existence of this new species.
A Unique Thai Nickname: Rakhang Akara
Interestingly, Miliusa majestatis also goes by the Thai nickname “Rakhang Akara” which translates to “Supreme Bell”. This name was given due to the distinctive bell-shaped petals found on the plant.

The Significance of the Name
The name “Majestatis” was chosen as a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, who has been a staunch advocate for biodiversity conservation throughout her life. By naming this new plant species in her honor, the researchers at Chiang Mai University aim to emphasize the importance of biodiversity preservation and Queen Sirikit’s contributions to the field.
