Introduction

As the population of Thailand continues to age, health concerns for the elderly population are becoming increasingly important. Recognizing the need to address these issues, Koh Samui Hospital has launched the “Elderly Sleep Comfort Project: Delay Dementia.”

Opening Ceremony

On September 4, 2023, the Deputy Director of Koh Samui Hospital, Dr. Songsay Chananin Prommes, presided over the project’s opening ceremony. The event was well-attended, with representatives from the National Health Security Fund, Koh Samui Hospital officials, members of the Elderly Club, and staff from the municipality’s public health and environment department all present.

Addressing the Challenges of an Aging Society

The primary aim of the Elderly Sleep Comfort Project is to help Thailand’s aging population maintain their health and well-being. As the number of elderly individuals in the country rises, health problems related to aging, such as the decline of various bodily systems, become more prevalent. By providing knowledge and resources to the elderly, the project hopes to tackle some of these pressing issues head-on.

The Importance of Sleep for the Elderly

One key area of focus for the project is sleep health. Insomnia is a common problem among older adults, often resulting from changes in sleep patterns that occur with age. Through the Elderly Sleep Comfort Project, participants can gain a better understanding of the causes of insomnia, learn how sleep patterns change as they age, and discover strategies for improving their sleep quality.

Herbal Pillows for Better Sleep

During the opening ceremony, attendees were offered a demonstration on the use of herbal pillows. These pillows, filled with natural herbs, are believed to aid in promoting a more restful sleep. By incorporating herbal pillows into their sleep routines, the elderly may find it easier to achieve the high-quality sleep they need for overall health and well-being.

Supporting Holistic Health for the Elderly

The National Health Security Fund and Koh Samui Municipality have both expressed their support for the Elderly Sleep Comfort Project. By promoting awareness of the importance of comprehensive health care for older adults, the project aims to prevent potential health problems and help individuals maintain their independence for as long as possible.

Through initiatives like the Elderly Sleep Comfort Project, Thailand is taking important steps to address the needs of its aging population, helping to ensure a better quality of life for all.
