Gaining Key Cabinet Positions
Bhumjaithai, the second-largest party in the government coalition, has demonstrated its political strength, as it is poised to secure several crucial cabinet positions. The party, which holds 71 seats in parliament, played a strong hand in negotiations and even threatened to leave the coalition if they didn’t get their desired positions.
As a result of intense negotiations since the formation of the new coalition, led by the Pheu Thai Party with 141 MPs, Bhumjaithai is expected to gain control over key ministries in the government.
The “4+4” Quota
With its “4+4” quota, Bhumjaithai is expected to secure the positions of the Interior Minister, Education Minister, Labor Minister, and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation. Additionally, the party will also assume the roles of Deputy Interior Minister, Deputy Education Minister, Deputy Agriculture Minister, and Deputy Commerce Minister.
The Interior Ministry has been a particularly sought-after position, as it is regarded as the second most influential cabinet role after the Prime Minister.
Bhumjaithai Party Leaders Secure Key Roles
Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul is expected to be appointed as the Interior Minister, while also serving as a deputy minister. Anutin’s appointment to this role comes after surpassing a strong contender, Phumtham Wechayachai, who serves as the deputy leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party. Phumtham is now anticipated to be appointed as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economic ministries under Pheu Thai’s quota.
Other Notable Appointments
Other Bhumjaithai leaders are also expected to take up important positions in the coalition government. Pol Gen Permpool Chidchob is likely to be appointed as the Education Minister, while the party’s deputy leader, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, who previously served as Tourism Minister, could become the new Labor Minister. Another Bhumjaithai deputy leader, Songsak Thongsri, is expected to be named Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation.
Bhumjaithai MP Chada Thaiset is being considered for a Deputy Interior Minister position, while other members Surachai Pancharoenworakul, Napinthorn Srisanpang, and Supamas Issarapakdi are also in line for key appointments within the coalition government.
