A Brief History
Koh Samui, a stunning island located in the Gulf of Thailand, was first mentioned in the Chiweewan book penned by Prince Krom Phrayanuphan Wongworadet in 1932. This historical document provides evidence of people settling on the island during the late Ayutthaya period and speaks of three pagodas constructed during the Thonburi era. The origin of the name “Samui” remains unclear; however, several theories suggest connections to the Hainan Chinese word “Shao Muay” (first defense), the Tamil word “Soi” (wind wave), or the southern Thai tree “Ton Mui.”
Governance and Development
Koh Samui was initially governed by the Nakhon Si Thammarat City Hall (District) situated in Ban Don Taeng, Na Mueang Subdistrict in the southern part of the island. In 1898, the City Hall was dissolved and became a district under Muang Chaiya, with Phraya Charoen Ratchaphakdi appointed as the first district officer. The initial city location was deemed unsuitable due to the numerous coral rocks in the bay, which proved challenging for boats to dock and avoid wind and waves.

The island, located 84 kilometers northeast of Surat Thani Province, comprises one-third plains surrounded by mountains. The most favorable time to visit Koh Samui is between January and May when the sea is calm, making it perfect for travelers to explore its natural beauty.
