A Life Well-Lived: Nidhi’s Journey

Nidhi Eoseewong, a renowned historian, writer, and political commentator, passed away at the age of 83. His family revealed that he succumbed to lung cancer. Nidhi’s life was characterized by his dedication to academics, his passion for Thai history, and his contributions to the world of political commentary.

Born in 1940 to a Chinese-Thai family in Chiang Mai, Nidhi went on to graduate from the Faculty of Arts at Chulalongkorn University with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. His academic career began at the Faculty of Humanities of Chiang Mai University, where he held a teaching position.

Academic Achievements: A Life of Learning

After a sabbatical, Nidhi returned to Chiang Mai University in 1976, armed with a doctorate degree from Michigan University in the United States. His contributions to the academic world earned him the title of professor, and he chose to retire early in 2000 to continue his research and writing.

Nidhi’s academic work spanned over 50 years, with a focus on Thai history, literature, and political science. He was also a member of the Country Reformation Committee, a 19-person group established after the 2010 military crackdown during the Abhisit Vejjajiva administration.

Throughout his career, Nidhi received numerous honorary awards, including an honorary doctorate degree from Burapha University in 1997, the Outstanding Research Award from the National Research Council of Thailand, the Siburapha Award, and the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize.

Nidhi: A Voice in Political Commentary

In addition to his academic pursuits, Nidhi was an active writer of political commentaries for various magazines. His voice contributed significantly to the political discourse in Thailand, reflecting his deep understanding of Thai history and politics.

Honoring Nidhi’s Legacy

To commemorate Nidhi’s life and contributions, a food alms ceremony will be held at Wat U-mong in Chiang Mai on Thursday. In line with his wishes, his body will be donated to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for medical research and education purposes.

Nidhi Eoseewong’s passing leaves a void in the world of Thai history, literature, and political commentary. His work and dedication have left a lasting impact on future generations, ensuring his legacy will live on.
